Red Deer Runners Athletic Bursary 

The Red Deer Runners club is pleased to continue its athletic bursary program.  The club is seeking applications from any athlete competitively involved in provincial or national track, mid- or long-distance running, or cross-country running.  You can pick up an application form by visiting the Runners Den at #6, 5511 Gaetz Avenue during regular business hours, by clicking here (you'll need Adobe Acrobat), or by sending us an e-mail

Criteria Guidelines

I. To be considered, the applicant should:

  1. Reside within a 40 kilometer radius of Red Deer.
  2. Have resided in the area for at least one year prior to date of application.
  3. Provide a written application outlining:
  1. Financial need.
  2. Evidence of athletic competence at a Regional, Provincial or National level. (listed in order of priority).
  3. Evidence of dedication to a running discipline. 
  4. References: - must include 2 written references indicating competence and dedication, particularly from coaches.
  5. Purpose for the grant 
  1. Send the Red Deer Runners a written report of the event.

A selection committee to be composed of four members of sitting Red Deer Runners will review all applications.


II. General Criteria:

  1. Grants are provided only to individuals or groups from ages 14 to 22 years of age.
  2. Grants are provided only to applicants in running oriented sports, including but not limited to: track, mid or long distance running, cross-country running.  Areas of consideration:
  1. travel to and from competition
  2. accommodation/meals for competition
  3. participation fees
  4. other
  1. Personal interviews may be requested with the athlete and/or coach and parents.
  2. Payment to be made in advance of any sponsored event with an understanding that payment would be refunded to the Red Deer Runners if not spent or used in the manner intended.
  3. Priority will be given to members of a club who train year round and, who therefore demonstrate a high degree of commitment.
  4. Priority will also be given to athletes who earn a placement in an advanced level of competition. Multiple applications from any club may be referred to the coach for prioritization.
  5. It is a specific condition of the granting of assistance that a financial need be indicated. (No other substantial financial support has been received or will be received).
